Forces and Newton’s laws is part of the Mechanics topic in NSW Year 12 Mathematics Extension 2 (NESA outcome ME2-12-05). This subtopic examines Newton’s three laws of motion and finds acceleration using \(F = m\ddot{x}\), where \(F\) is the resultant force acting on a mass \(m\).
Students and teachers will cover how to treat forces as vector quantities, resolve concurrent forces into perpendicular components, and use vector projections to determine how much of a force acts in a given direction in both 2D and 3D — connecting vectors to mechanics in the HSC Extension 2 course.
